Cannabinoids as Functional Medicine, Part 1

This is Part One in a series on Cannabinoids as Functional Medicine with Dr. Joe Cohen, Doctor of Osteopathy, Functional Medicine Provider, and Cannabinoid specialist.

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

All animals have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) starting with Sea Squirts 600 million years ago. We have receptors throughout our body, the most prominent are known as CB1 and CB2 receptors. When emotional and physical stressors cause our system to be out of balance, we immediately produce our endocannabinoids - anandamide and 2AG - in order to self-correct and bring our system back into balance. That is why cannabis is an adaptogen. Because we are wired for this plant and its ability to bring things back into balance (homeostasis), cannabis may be considered the ideal functional medicine!

The differences between THC, Cannabis, and Hemp

Delta9-THC is the psychoactive compound found in cannabis and is responsible the “high” that can be therapeutic for many. It is also, especially when combined with non-psychoactive components of the plant, an effective analgesic. CBD decreases the psycho-activity caused by THC as well as undesired side effects such as anxiety and tachycardia.
